Ava DuVernay Talks Linda Fairstein With Oprah Winfrey: “I Think That It’s Important That People Be Held Accountable” - Blogged By: @carmen.roxanna ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #OprahWinfrey shared the stage with the 11 actors and three producers from #AvaDuVernay’s ‘When They See Us’ as well as the men, now known collectively as the Exonerated Five: Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Korey Wise. The discussion took place during Netflix’s final ‘For Your Consideration’ Emmy event in Los Angeles, following a screening of the first episode of the limited series. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the days following the series debut on May 31 via Netflix, #LindaFairstein, the Former lead prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's office who is responsible for the wrongful imprisonment of the five men, has been the subject of severe backlash in real life and on social media. Since then, she has resigned from the boards of Vassar College and God’s Love We Deliver and the Joyful Heart Foundation. Fairstein’s publisher also dropped her amid the backlash. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During the panel discussion, Oprah asked DuVernay for her thoughts on the backlash Fairstein has received. Mentioning Fairstein’s remarks from a recent interview with ‘The Daily Beast’ in which she called ‘When They See Us’ “a basket of lies,” posed the question: “What do you have to say?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ava replied, “I think that it’s important that people be held accountable. And that accountability is happening in a way today that it did not happen for the real men 30 years ago. But I think that it would be a tragedy if this story and the telling of it came down to one woman being punished for what she did because it’s not about her. It’s not all about her.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ava continued, “She is part of a system that’s not broken, it was built to be this way. Kylie Jenner Threw A “Handmaids Tale” Birthday Party For Her BFF And Twitter Ain’t Having It - Blogged By: @carmen.roxanna ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kylie Jenner pissed off a few Twitter users after posting photos and video during her oddly themed party based on Hulu’s series ‘A Handmaid’s Tale’ for her BFF Stassi Karanikolaou’s Birthday. Seemingly, the only people who felt the party was a great idea were the attendees...because social media went off! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Kylie Jenner is having a party themed after the Handmaid’s Tale.....so.....who’s gonna tell her that her party is literally celebrating female enslavement for their biological reproduction?? WHO IS GOING TO TELL HER,” one Twitter user posted. Another user tweeted, “Women's bodies get policed on a daily, some states are trying to ban abortion, yet Kylie Jenner thought a Handmaid's tale theme party was a good idea.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For those who may be unaware of the series, ‘A Handmaid’s Tale’ was originally a book by Margaret Atwood that was recently turned into a popular drama series by Hulu. The series portrays a dystopian society in which infertile married couples of high status enslave fertile women and subject them to monthly rapes in order to get them pregnant. With the current attack on female reproductive rights, this topic hit close to home for many. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is my favorite show ever, so for Stas’s birthday, welcome to Gilead! Get your outfit!” Kylie shouted in a video as she turned into the camera toward a row of red handmaid robes and bonnets, just like what the characters wear in the series. Kylie and her friends, including Sofia Richie, took selfies in the outfits while partaking in drinks like “Praise Be vodka” and “Under His Eye” tequila, also references to the series. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How do you feel about Kylie’s choice of party theme? It is her favorite show 🤷🏾♀️
Michael B. Jordan Says He’s Been Asked To Play “Every Historical Black Figure” - written by @msjennyb (📸David Becker/Getty Images for The Blackhouse Foundation) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For years, African Americans have fallen victim to the deeply rooted racism in Hollywood, which is displayed in typecast roles and whitewashed stories. However, amid the widespread success of black creatives and blockbusters, more Hollywood hotshots have opened up to the push for more black stories. But, the increase has seemingly become a gift and a curse for those who nail historical pieces, as it can open the opportunity for more work and also limit the opportunity for growth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In fact, Michael B. Jordan opened up about the circumstances at Saturday’s Produced By conference, in which he explained his outstanding portrayal of Oscar Grant III, who was a victim of police brutality, led to a slew of other biographical opportunities. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Every historical black figure have come across my desk,” Jordan said, adding that “As much as I would love to play all of them, I can’t,” he said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While Jordan was able to move forward without a multitude of biopics under his belt, other actors like Chadwick Boseman, who’s been cast as Jackie Robinson, James Brown and Thurgood Marshall, felt he just couldn’t say no. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “All of them were different situations…it’s not like I’m necessarily looking for important Black figures,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “Like James Brown, it just kept calling me at a certain point when I was saying no; it was like James Brown was calling me himself. And Jackie Robinson, there was no way in the world I wasn’t going to do that. So, it was sought after not just by me but by a lot of people. They all were a little bit different in ....…to read the rest log on to BallerAlert.com (clickable link on profile)
Central Park Five Received Additional $3.9 Million Settlement From State of New York In 2016 - Blogged By: @carmen.roxanna ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ava Duvernay’s limited series “When They See Us,” has put the five innocent men, commonly known as The Central Park Five, back into the spotlight 30 years after being accused and charged with rape of a white woman. Since their exonerations in 2002, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam and Korey Wise have all received compensation for their false imprisonment, though no amount of money can make up for the childhoods lost. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The men sued New York City, following their exoneration in 2003, for malicious prosecution, racial discrimination, and emotional distress but didn’t settle until 2014 for $41 million. It took over 10 years to settle due in part to city lawyers under former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to reports, the attorneys believed that they could win a court case, and as a result, the city refused to settle. But after Bill de Blasio was elected as mayor, he supported settling the case, and the case was closed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The five men pursued an additional $52 million in damages from the state of New York as well. That settlement in 2016 ended with the men receiving only $3.9 million, in what the Daily News describes as a “low-key state Court of Claims payout” for the “economic and emotional devastation caused by the incarceration of the five men.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to Daily News, the 2016 additional settlement awarded Raymond Santana $500,000; Antron McCray $600,000 and Yusef Salaam and Kevin Richardson $650,000 each. Korey Wise received $1.5 million, as he served the most prison time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the attorneys in both settlements, Jonathan Moore, told the Daily News, “I understand people say it’s a lot of money. The reality is there’s no amount of money that would adequately compensate them. They’ve suffered every day since 1989, and they’re still suffering.”
